Migaku Language Learning Extension

Three weeks ago, someone on the viki subber discord posted a screenshot that looked like this:

It looked interesting, so I asked them where it was from, and they just said, "Migaku".

I looked it up and it was a very fast descent from there. That was on March 5, and by March 8, I had bought the thing. It is so good! I absolutely recommend it. So what does it do?

The Migaku Language Learning extension is a tool for learning these languages:

It comes as a Chrome browser extension - only for Chrome, but once I saw what it does, I understood why they can't support more than one browser. I also don't really like to use Chrome, but for this: omg yes! The main features are:

Dual subtitles on Netflix, Youtube, Viki, Disney+ (and soon, once it's out of Early Access, Bilibili and iQiyi).

Personalized vocab: it knows which words you know and which ones you still need to learn.

This alone would probably have been enough to make me consider paying for it. But there's more. In no particular order:

The only downside to it is that it's not free: normal price is 10€ per month, 8€ per month on a yearly plan. There are frequent discounts. I'm happily paying for these features, especially the anki integration. It means I can continue my usual vocab learning routine with anki, and new cards are generated with a single click from the videos I'm always watching anyway.

I'm aware that most of these features can be cobbled together through free tools. I have tried. I've made video cards for anki before, but the manual process is more time-consuming. Dual subtitles, auto-generated subs, all of that is possible with other tools, but it's fiddly and I never really got it to work the way I wanted it. Overall, having all those features work out of the box with one single extension is absolutely worth it for me. I'm very motivated to learn the 300 or so new cards I've generated in the last three weeks, and as long as that is the case, I will gladly keep paying for migaku.

Vidding links for DaVinci Resolve

Since I just finished my first fanvid, and I collected a lot of links for things I learned about DaVinci Resolve on the way and posted them to communal_creators, I thought I could post them here too:

The tools I used:

DaVinci Resolve for video editing (it's free)

LossLessCut for clipping (it's free if you download it from github directly)

Auto-Subs for turning the lyrics into subs (another github link) <- this is both a standalone app and a davinci resolve plugin

DaVinci Resolve tutorials:

how to add a video/audio clip to the timeline

how to save/export/deliver a vid

Those can already get you pretty far. I found moving the clips around on the timeline and shifting beginning and end frames intuitive (yay).

The most important thing for me to grasp was that the small buttons at the very bottom are very important! they are the main views. I mostly work with the Cut view, but the Edit view is also good. I have barely touched the others so far. (You need the Deliver view for saving.)

find the beats in the music with "transient detection"

fade the music in/out at the start/end

how to add a title page

editing basics (keyboard shortcuts)

use adjustment clips instead of adding effects to clips directly

temporarily disable effects for smoother playback

use proxy media to speed up editing/avoid lag

Writer Self-Challenge Bingo Card #2

Since I just - after four years, finally - managed a bingo on my first writer-self-challenge bingo card (here), I decided I'd call that one done and created a new card for myself.

I clicked a few times so I wouldn't get all the same prompts as before. Then I modified the card slightly because the Free space in the middle was somehow bothering me on my last card. So I just added a new prompt (one of those I had last time) and put it into the middle square. The new card shares eight prompts with the old one, and three of those I could not fill on the old card either. Making my life harder yo. :D I'm looking forward to the new challenge!

By now I've already filled a few squares, and there are about 6 weeks left, I should be able to make a dent in this card by then. *fingers crossed*

I *aaaaalmost* managed a blackout this time, only four squares left. I'm pretty proud of the result, and I definitely went out of my way to get the art squares filled, and the event squares, too. (I didn't manage the 3 stories from the same event, although I tried. I got two.)

Comment Bingo Round 2 Completed

I called my second card done at 17 of 25 fills.

It's surprising that I didn't manage much more than in round 1, because I really tried this time. But in the end, I couldn't motivate myself to go searching for fic posted between 2010 and 2017, or from my first fandom... :/ . Maybe next time. I'll definitely sign up again for round 3.

Dreamwidth User Script - Copy links of uploaded images

I wrote another userscript, because it annoyed me how difficult it is to make picspams using the dw gallery: you upload ten pics, then paste the image codes out of the textfields one by one... grrrrrrr.

So what this script does is it adds two buttons that copy all the codes of all the images you just uploaded to the clipboard, all at once.

This is what it looks like:

You press the Get All Image Codes button, it copies the exact content of all the Image Codes fields on the page to the clipboard.

Press the Get 800x800 Image Tags button, you get only the img tags, and the images at size 800x800. It's what I personally use most often for picspam purposes.

Tested with Firefox and Chrome. Uses CSS3 animations, so won't work in older browsers. (Or at least, it won't flash the buttons the way it does in modern browsers.)

I won my Nano again!

Just like last year, I used Nano as an incentive to edit the Guardian novel faster than I otherwise would have.

It worked even better this year than last - mostly because all the tricky and time-consuming mythological stuff was already done last year. :D

But this meant I got more words this year: I edited 7 chapters (98 to 104) and over 25K words this November! \o/

Nanowrimo 2021

Like last year, I am going to reinterpret Nano for my own purposes and attempt to edit an insane amount of words on the Guardian novel. :D

I still need to edit about 30K words (in 9 chapters), and last year I managed 18K (in 7 chapters). I don't think I can do all 30K, but I really need to do almost that if I want to finish the whole novel this year as planned. So I will set my goal to 25K.

Writer Self-Challenge Bingo

hils alerted me to a writing bingo. It's different than other bingos, and while I'm usually not into writing bingos, this one immediately made me want to try it. Usually, bingos are one square per story. But I don't like being prompted, and I don't write that many stories. This bingo, otoh, is about writing-related things to try, and you can check off a square every time you do one of them. It doesn't matter how many stories you're writing.

I don't think I'll be able to finish this in a reasonable amount of time, but I'm sure I'll have fun trying. :D
